The launching of scholarships for white males in the US state of Texas is nothing short of incredible. Many would cringe at the idea, but there are people out there, who are absolutely convinced, that the current scholarship programs are heavily skewed, in favor of select demographic representations, leaving the white male desperately wanting in terms of financial aid. The issue of scholarships for white males, emerging from the US, is hard to believe, since it’s a country that has been ruled by a white majority. But for those, who propounded the idea, it was a necessity, given the neglect faced by country’s white males when it came to securing financial aid.
Brainchild of Colby Bohannan and a group of student friends at the Texas State University in San Marcos, TX have formed the non-profit organization called Former Majority Association for Equality, which intends to offer $1000 worth college scholarships exclusively to white men. The groups’ members increasingly felt that scholarships were being offered to all sorts of sub groups within the country such as Blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans, Asians, single working mothers, and every other imaginable group leaving aside white men. To correct this grave anomaly, the group thought of assisting white men in this unique manner, who thought were no longer a majority with in US.
To qualify candidates have to be, ‘Caucasian, male, demonstrate a commitment to education, and substantiate financial need’, according to the group’s website.
The groups’ mission statement clearly states that, “it wants to financially assist young Americans seeking higher education who lack opportunities in similar organizations that are based upon race or gender. In a country that proclaims equality for all, we provide monetary aid to those that have found the scholarship application process difficult because they do not fit into certain categories or any ethnic group”.
Student Colby Bohannan, the president of the group, said, “I’m not sure white males are the majority anymore,” adding, “There’s a scholarship out there for just about any demographic, except this one. We realize it’s for good reason — this is a touchy subject.” There are many who believe that the group has ulterior racial and political motives, something which Colby Bohannan has out rightly rejected.
Putting their motives into perspective, the group’s website says that, Former Majority Association for Equality “has no political aspirations, financial agenda, or radical social philosophies whatsoever. We do not advocate white supremacy, nor do we enable any individual that does. We do not accept donations from organizations affiliated with any sort of white supremacy or hate group. We have no hidden agenda to promote racial bigotry or segregation. FMAE’s existence is dedicated around one simple principle, to provide monetary aid for education to white males who need it”.
What made Colby Bohannan so adamant about his beliefs was his own personal experience. A mass communication major, he left out when members from other sub groups most conveniently lapped up what was available. He adds, “There’s a scholarship out there for just about any demographic, except this one. We realize it’s for good reason”.
